Gem Industry Visit at Zam Gems

Hello! We are six volunteers for the Inzpire 12.0 Project of AIESEC in Sri Lanka. In this project, we are supposed to visit serval industries. Because of this opportunity, we can have a look at the gemstones and diamonds, visit the workshops, learn about the process of making a wonderful ring… So here, let us give you a brand-new view of the Gem Industry.

Today on 9th January 2019, we visited a gem industry. Located in 81 Galle Main Rd, Colombo 00400, Zam Gems is one of the country’s’ largest and most respected gems and jewelry manufacturers. It started from 1976 and headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Zam Gems employs over 500 people worldwide now. Zam Gems designs, manufactures and markets gemstones and modern jewelry. Their gems and jewelry are sold in more than 5 countries such as China and Japan. In this blog, we will give information about how to process the gemstones.

There are mainly 3 steps for stuffs to define the exact value of the gems. Now let’s start the examination for the stone with us and see whether it will bear much value and pride or not.

Step 1: measure the length of the stone using refractive index measured by refractometer

under the scope, we noticed some shadow around 17 mm, it points out its length.

Step2: weigh the stone

The stuff pointed out that though weight is also one of the elements of value estimation, it accounts less than other attributes like design, color, cutting and so forth.

Step3: watch the stone under microscope

This step provides rich information about the gemstone.

The color, nature and clearness are analyzed by stuffs carefully. The straight-veined is better than the curved-veined one. The dark blue one is better than the light blue one, to name just two.

In this final step, it was a pity that some bubbles were found in the quartz, thus it loses a bit price.

After that, the tested gemstones were sent to another floor for the process of jewelry. Workers on this floor use molds, iron tools and fire, to shape rings. In the future, these rings will be inlaid with gemstones and sent to the world with the blessings of Sri Lanka.

We know the truth that gem industry in Sri Lanka is famous over the world. Indeed, as we walked into the gates of zam gems, we were all attracted by the various and exquisite gemstones and diamonds. Then, the leaders gave us the detailed introduction of this industry which has a long history. The introduction included the history and the future of gem industry, the main market and the spot of origin. Also, leaders showed many types of the gemstones and explained characteristics of each. In addition, we asked for the employment situation from the local universities, which is connected with entrepreneurship and confirmed to the project’s goal.
